If you sell from New Zealand, Etsy takes a 6.5% transaction fee, 3% + NZ$0.30 for processing on domestic orders (4% + NZ$0.30 on international ones) and USD 0.20 per listing. There's no regulatory operating fee. Then it adds 15% GST to all of it unless you've given Etsy a VAT ID. On an NZ$50 sale, that's about NZ$6.21 in fees, not the NZ$5.40 the listed rates add up to.

Both columns are an NZ$50 order to a buyer in New Zealand, with no shipping charged and no ads. GST is the only line that changes. The biggest fee is the transaction fee: NZ$3.25, about 60% of Etsy's cut before GST.
Processing is the one Etsy fee in New Zealand that depends on where your buyer lives. On this order it's NZ$1.80 for a buyer in New Zealand and NZ$2.30 for a buyer anywhere else. If most of your orders ship overseas, price for the 4% rate, not the 3% one.
Do you pay GST on Etsy fees in New Zealand?
Yes, on every fee, until you give Etsy a VAT ID. Etsy still calls it a VAT ID in New Zealand, even though the tax here is GST. VAT ID or not, an invoice arrives on the first of each month: it lists last month's fees and the GST Etsy charged on them, or says it charged none.
If you aren't registered for GST, that 15% is a cost you can't claim back. It comes off your margin, not your buyer's wallet, so it belongs in your price. You have to register once your turnover reaches NZ$60,000 in 12 months, and you can register sooner.
If you are registered, there's a second cost. Etsy doesn't add GST at checkout when your goods are already in New Zealand, so the GST you owe on a local sale is already inside your listing price, and Etsy's transaction and processing fees are charged on that GST too.
