Etsy Sales Down? How to Find Which Listings to Fix

By Neha Chandelier ยท Published on ยท 13 min read

Your Etsy sales are down, and the first thing you want to do is start changing listings: new titles, new tags, new photos. Hold off. Most drops are either normal ups and downs or a problem in a handful of listings, and the sales total can’t tell you which. This guide shows you how to find out in Etsy Stats, step by step, before you edit anything.

I’ve sold on Etsy since 2020, and I made this mistake for a year. Sales dipped, I assumed it was SEO, and I spent the weekend rewriting titles and swapping tags. Sometimes that was right. Very often it was a wasted weekend.

Is all of Etsy down?

Not in 2026. After falling by high single digits in early 2025 and going flat by the end of the year, Etsy’s marketplace sales were 5.5% higher in the first quarter of 2026 than a year earlier, and 7.5% higher in the second, according to Etsy’s shareholder letters for the first quarter and the second. Etsy does say buyers are buying a bit less often than last year, so the market can explain part of a slow month. It can’t explain a shop that’s down while Etsy is up. For that, the cause is in your shop, your traffic or your season.

Step 1: Check that the drop is real

Orders come in at random, even when nothing changes. A shop that sells once a day on average doesn’t get exactly 28 orders every 28 days. Some months it gets 22, some months 34, and nothing caused either one.

So how big does a drop have to be before it means something? We ran the numbers with the Poisson distribution, the standard math for counting random events like orders. The table shows how often a shop whose real pace hasn’t changed still has a 28-day stretch that comes in 20% or 30% below the one before it, just by chance.

Your usual orders per 28 days Chance of a 20%+ drop vs the previous 28 days Chance of a 30%+ drop
15 (about one every other day) 28% 17%
30 (about one a day) 20% 9%
60 (about two a day) 11% 3%
120 (about four a day) 4% 0.3%

At about a sale a day, a 20% drop from one month to the next happens by chance about 1 time in 5. That’s a normal month, not a sign that something broke. Real shops swing even more than this, because promotions and seasons add their own ups and downs, so treat these as the smallest swings to expect.

And a sale a day is already a big shop. In Listadum’s October 17, 2026 snapshot of the active Etsy shops in our database, 28 sales in 28 days puts a shop above 9 in 10 shops in 12 of Etsy’s 15 top categories. The three exceptions are Pet Supplies, Electronics & Accessories, and Craft Supplies & Tools. It’s the same data behind our free Etsy Shop Stats Benchmark, where you can check your own category. So even a shop in the top tenth of its category has months that look like a crisis and aren’t.

Our rule of thumb, and it’s ours, not Etsy’s: if you sell one a day or less, look closer when sales are down 30% or more against the same dates last year, or when they stay down for a second 28-day stretch. Etsy’s own advice points the same way: look at a month or more at a time, and compare with the exact same period the previous year, because “we can all have a slow week or two”.

To check, open Etsy Stats (Shop Manager, then Stats) and pick a 30-day range. That’s close enough to the table’s 28 days. If your shop is more than a year old, turn on “Compare to previous period”, which Etsy’s help page describes as a comparison with the previous year. Don’t judge a single day. Etsy updates visits a few times a day and filters out bot traffic again at the end of the day, which can lower the count you saw that morning.

Comparing with last year also takes the season out of it. Etsy says each market has its own high and low seasons, so compare this October with last October, never this January with December. My co-founder Cyril wrote a whole post about that month: No, Your Etsy Shop Is Not Dying. It’s Just January.

Step 2: Find which traffic fell

If the drop is real, open the “How shoppers found you” section of Stats. It splits your visits by where they came from: Etsy search, Etsy app and other Etsy pages, Etsy marketing and SEO, direct and other traffic, social media, Etsy Ads and Offsite Ads. Compare each one with the same dates last year. The one that fell tells you where to look.

  • Etsy Ads or Offsite Ads fell. Check your ad budget and settings before you change any listing. Etsy says running Etsy Ads doesn’t change where your listings appear in regular search results outside the ad spaces, so ads are a separate problem. One catch: ads clicked inside the Etsy app count under “Etsy app and other Etsy pages”, not under Etsy Ads.
  • Social or direct fell. Something outside Etsy changed. Maybe a Pinterest pin stopped sending people, or you’ve posted less.
  • Etsy search fell. This is the one that points to your listings. Choose Etsy search in that section to see which search terms brought shoppers in.

A search drop can also come from Etsy’s side, where your Stats can’t show it. Etsy has said it’s moving search away from “what was most likely to convert in the moment” toward “a more personalized, relevance-driven approach”. So a listing can lose search traffic even if you didn’t change a thing. Find out which listings lost it before you decide what to change.

One kind of drop is different: Etsy search falls to almost zero for your whole shop on the same day, including listings you never touched. That isn’t a few listings losing ground, so editing listings won’t fix it. Check the Policy violations page and your messages from Etsy. Then look in Etsy’s Technical Issues forum for other sellers reporting the same thing on the same days. Don’t test it by searching for your own shop. Etsy says search results are unique to each shopper, so your own search isn’t a true test. Your Stats are. And skip the trick of turning vacation mode on and off to “force a re-index” (make Etsy re-read your shop). Etsy warns that after vacation mode you might not see the same search traffic as before, so don’t risk it on a shop that still sells.

Step 3: Lost visits or lost buyers?

Orders are visits times conversion rate. Etsy counts a visit as one browsing session in your shop, and conversion rate as the share of visits that ended in an order. So fewer orders means one of two problems, and they have different fixes.

  • Visits down, conversion steady or up. Fewer people are finding you, but the ones who come still buy. When conversion is up and visits are down, Etsy’s advice is to look at your traffic sources, which you just did in step 2.
  • Visits steady, conversion down. People still find you. They just don’t buy. As I wrote in our Etsy shop audit guide, this is a conversion problem, and SEO won’t fix it. Look at your first photo, price, reviews and shipping.

Step 4: Find the listings that lost the sales

Now scroll down to “Shoppers viewed your listings” in Stats. It shows views, favorites, orders and revenue for each listing, and you can sort by any of them.

Sort by views, not orders. With 100 or more listings and a sale a day, most listings get zero to two orders a month, and numbers that small are mostly chance. A listing that usually sells 2 every 28 days will have a month with no sales about 1 time in 7, with nothing wrong. Views come in bigger numbers, so a real drop shows up there sooner. Only use orders for your few best sellers.

  1. Pick the same 30 days you checked in step 1 and sort by views. Write down your top 20 listings and their views.
  2. Use Specific Dates to pick the same 30 days last year. Check that the list updated to the new dates, then write down the top 20 again.
  3. Compare the two lists. The listings that dropped off it, or lost most of their views, are the ones to work on.

Two things can hide a listing from that list. The first is a best seller that expired or sold out. Choose All listings in that section to see expired and sold out listings. Etsy’s own checklist for a dip names this one: “If you’ve stopped offering a popular item or forgotten to renew it, this could contribute to a decline in traffic to your shop.” The second is a listing Etsy removed for a policy reason. Those show up on the Policy violations page in Shop Manager, with your full removal history. If you think a listing was removed by mistake, Etsy recommends appealing instead of relisting, and says most reviews finish within 3 days but can take 10 to 12.

Then open the Search Visibility page in Shop Manager. It flags listing issues Etsy weighs in search, such as a main photo smaller than the recommended 2000 pixels, a missing return policy, or a category that isn’t specific enough. For US listings, it says domestic shipping under $6 is prioritized in search.

If you have hundreds of listings, writing those lists by hand gets tedious. Our Listing Manager puts views, sales, revenue and conversion rate for every listing in one table, over 7 days, 30 days or all time, and you can sort by any column. In the 7-day and 30-day views, sales, revenue and conversion each show a red or green trend, so a listing that’s going quiet stands out. You can also filter by listing state (active, sold out, expired, removed), so a best seller that quietly expired shows up too. It’s on every plan, including Free. The 7-day and 30-day views fill in once your shop has been connected that long, so connect it before you need them. One difference from Etsy: conversion there is sales per view, not orders per visit.

Step 5: Check what changed, then fix one listing at a time

For each listing you wrote down, ask what changed on your side in the weeks before the drop: a new title, a new first photo, a price change, a new shipping profile, a bulk edit, or a VA working through the shop. In the Listing Manager you can filter by when a listing was last edited. On the Growth or Max plan, Time Machine keeps snapshots of each listing’s title, description, tags, materials and photos, so you can see what it said before the drop and restore it, one listing at a time.

Then fix only what the steps above pointed to:

  • Leave the listings that still sell alone. They’re doing their job.
  • Change one thing per listing, so you can tell what worked.
  • Save the old version first. Etsy suggests downloading a CSV of your listings before you apply title changes, so you keep the original keywords.
  • Don’t renew or relist just to get a boost. Etsy says new and renewed listings get a small, temporary boost, and that renewing just for it “isn’t an effective search optimization strategy”.
  • Give each change at least 28 days before you judge it, and use the table in step 1 to tell a real change from chance.

Questions sellers ask

Does editing a listing reset its Etsy ranking?

Etsy doesn’t say so. Its help page says you can edit any part of a listing at any time at no cost, and neither that page nor Etsy’s search guide says an edit wipes a listing’s history. The bigger risk is simpler: you change a listing that was selling and lose whatever made it sell.

Did losing Star Seller cost me search traffic?

Not directly, according to Etsy. Etsy’s search guide says Star Seller “does not directly impact the ordering of search results”. If your visits fell around the time you lost the badge, check which traffic source fell (step 2) before you blame the badge.
