"Oh dear, you cannot sell this item on Etsy."

Short answer: Etsy rejected the listing because of how three settings fit together: Who made it, What is it, and When was it made. The listing isn't broken, and nothing is wrong with your Listadum connection. Etsy thinks the item, as described, doesn't qualify to be sold on Etsy. Fix those settings and the listing will save.

Why this happens

Etsy only allows three kinds of items:

  • Handmade: made or designed by you or someone in your shop

  • Craft supplies and tools: things other people use to make their own creations

  • Vintage: at least 20 years old

Every listing tells Etsy which kind it is through the "Who made it," "What is it," and "When was it made" fields. If the combination doesn't match one of the three kinds, Etsy blocks the listing and returns this message. The same thing happens whether you create a listing, edit one, or save changes from Listadum, because Listadum sends your listing to Etsy through Etsy's official API and passes along Etsy's response.​

The most common causes

"Another company or person" made a finished product, with no production partner.

This is the most common cause. If someone outside your shop makes the item (a print-on-demand provider, a printer, a manufacturer), Etsy requires you to add that production partner to the listing. Without one, Etsy treats the item as resold and blocks it.

Fix: In Etsy Shop Manager, go to "Settings → Partners you work with" and create the partner if you haven't already. Then open the listing and select that partner.​

The item is marked as vintage but doesn't fit Etsy's definition of vintage.

If "When was it made" is set to a date range at least 20 years ago, Etsy treats the item as vintage. Vintage items can't be marked "I did" (you can't have made something new 20+ years ago for resale as vintage). The reverse also fails: an item marked as vintage but made recently.

Fix: Set "When was it made" to the real date. If you made the item, choose a recent range or "Made to order."​

Someone else made it, and it's listed as a finished product, but it's really a supply.

Beads, blank mugs, fabric, and similar items made by another company are allowed on Etsy only as supplies.

Fix: Set "What is it" to A supply or tool to make things. Only do this if it's actually true.​

You copied the listing from another shop.

Production partners belong to a single shop. A listing duplicated from another shop may point to a partner that doesn't exist in the new shop.

Fix: Open the listing in the new shop and select a production partner that shop owns.

​How to fix it, step by step:

  1. Open the listing in Etsy Shop Manager, make sure you have created the equivalent Production partner in "Settings → Partners you work with"

  2. Check Who made it, What is it, and When was it made, and make sure they describe the item truthfully.

  3. If "Another company or person" is selected for a finished product, make sure you selected at least one production partner.

  4. Save the listing again

A word of caution

Don't switch "Who made it" to "I did" just to get past the error if that isn't true. Etsy reviews listings against these answers, and getting them wrong puts your whole shop at risk, not only the listing. If the item isn't handmade, vintage, or a craft supply, Etsy won't allow it no matter which settings you pick.
