Listing issues: Single word tags

Single-word tags like "necklace" or "gift" are extremely broad and highly competitive. With millions of listings on Etsy, a single-word tag puts you in direct competition with a huge number of sellers, making it very unlikely that your listing will stand out.

Multi-word tags (also called long-tail keywords) are more specific and match more closely with what buyers are actually searching for. They help you reach the right audience and face less competition.

What Etsy recommends

Etsy encourages the use of multi-word phrases as tags. In the Etsy Seller Handbook, Etsy advises:

"Use multi-word phrases as tags to be more specific. For example, instead of "scarf," try "silk scarf" or "hand-knit wool scarf." This helps your listing match with more specific buyer searches."

Multi-word tags help Etsy’s search algorithm better understand your product and match it with buyers who are looking for exactly what you sell.

Do’s & Don’ts

Do:

  • Use multi-word phrases like "handmade ceramic mug" or "boho wedding earrings."
  • Think about what buyers would type into the search bar and use those phrases as tags.
  • Mix broad and specific phrases to cover different types of searches.

Don’t:

  • Use single-word tags like "ring," "dress," or "art" that are too broad.
  • Duplicate words across tags. Each tag should add new keywords.
  • Use tags that don’t relate to your actual product.
