Listing issues: Category could be refined

Etsy organizes listings into a hierarchy of categories (also called taxonomy). Choosing the most specific category possible for your listing helps Etsy’s search algorithm understand exactly what your product is, which improves your chances of appearing in relevant searches and category browsing.

When your listing is placed in a broad, top-level category instead of a more specific subcategory, it competes with a much larger pool of listings and may not appear when buyers filter by specific categories.

What Etsy recommends

Etsy recommends selecting the most specific category available for each listing. In the Etsy Seller Handbook, Etsy advises:

"Categories work a lot like tags. Being more specific with categories will help you get found. Choose the most specific category that fits your item."

Selecting a deeper, more specific category ensures your listing is accurately classified and helps it surface in the right browse and search results.

Do’s & Don’ts

Do:

  • Drill down to the most specific subcategory that accurately describes your product.
  • Review Etsy’s full category tree to find the best match for your item.
  • Update categories when Etsy adds new, more specific options.

Don’t:

  • Leave your listing in a broad top-level category like "Jewelry" when "Jewelry > Necklaces > Pendant Necklaces" is available.
  • Choose an inaccurate category just because it seems less competitive.
  • Ignore category selection. It’s as important as tags for discoverability.

How can Listadum help

Listadum automatically detects when your listing is not using the deepest available category as part of the listing’s completion score. This helps you quickly identify listings where the category can be refined for better visibility.
